Introduction
In today’s dynamic business environment, mergers, acquisitions, and organizational restructuring are common occurrences. These transitions often necessitate opportunities for the migration of data and services from one Microsoft 365 tenant to another. Tenant-to-tenant migration is a crucial process that ensures seamless business continuity, data integrity, and user productivity for minimal disruption to daily operations.
Key Consideration
Here are the key considerations of Tenant to Tenant Viva Engage Migration
- Planning and Assessment
- Gaining adequate permission for both the source and target tenant.
- Choosing the right migration tool and services.
- Maintaining a seamless user experience.
Assessment Phrase
During the assessment phase, the migration team jotted down all the viva-engage-related data from the source tenant, which included information related to all groups, conversations, files, users, user permissions, etc. A graphical and tabular report that reflects the insight information have been presented below for faster decision-making.

What we migrate
During the Tenant-to-Tenant Viva Engage (formerly Yammer) Migration, our primary goal is to ensure a seamless transition while preserving critical data, user experience, and collaboration history. The migration process includes the following elements:
Conversations
All discussions, threads, and messages from the source tenant are migrated to the target tenant, ensuring historical records remain intact. Using Azure Entra ID app permissions, we can impersonate active users in the target tenant, ensuring that migrated conversations appear as if the original authors posted them. This enhances the authenticity of the migration and provides a consistent user experience.
Files
Any documents, images, or attachments stored within Viva Engage conversations or groups will be migrated. These files will retain their association with their respective conversations and groups to maintain organizational context.
Groups
All groups, along with their members and associated content, are transferred to the target tenant. This ensures that collaborative spaces remain functional post-migration.
User Data
Essential user details such as profiles, participation history, and activity records are migrated, allowing users to continue their engagement without disruption.
User Permissions
Permissions assigned to users in the source tenant are carried over to the target tenant. This ensures that users retain appropriate access levels, preventing unauthorized access or loss of collaboration capabilities.
User Impersonation and Authorship Considerations
Active Users
Azure Entra ID app permissions allow impersonation for users who exist in both the source and target tenants. This ensures that conversations and posts appear under the original authorship.
Missing Users
If a user from the source tenant does not exist in the target tenant, impersonation is not possible. In such cases, messages may be migrated under a designated system account or administrator, with appropriate disclaimers if necessary.
By implementing user impersonation, we ensure that migrated content remains as close to the original as possible, reducing confusion and preserving the historical integrity of conversations and engagements.
Key achievement
- With the help of Azure Entra ID app permission, we can now impersonate active users in the target tenant during conversation migration to achieve a seamless user experience.
- Not only conversations but also the metadata associated with that conversation like Tags, Mentions are also migrated.
Limitation
We cannot impersonate users if the users involved in conversations in the source tenant are not present in the target tenan
